Jack's First Car

Ok, so I know he is only six months old but every father longs for that day when he can buy his son his first car. I just could not wait that long. So me and PaPa did it. We bought Jack a classic 1971 GMC C/K 1500 truck. This is a special truck to me and my dad because my first car was a 1967 Chevy C10 truck. The GMC is the same body style and even the same color (blue/white) that my '67 chevy was. It was just to good of a deal to pass up.

The nice part about the GMC is that almost all the engine work has been done. It has a chevy 327 ci small block, turbo 350 trans, quadrajet four barrel carb, headers, flowmaster dual exhaust and 18 inch crome wheels. The guy we bought it from even hooked us up with a polished Edelbrock intake, crome Edelbrock preformer 750 carb and Edelbrock crome valve covers. He is even going to get them installed for us at his speed shop. On top of all that in 1971 they added the auto transmision, power stearing, and front disk brakes. My '67 chevy was an inline six with three speed trans on the tree and no power stering or breaks. So needless to say this is a nice set up.

The challenging part of this project is going to be the body work. Lucky for us my dad's company has a shop near by where we can do most of the cutting and welding and the rest will be done in my garage. The truck has rust in most of the common areas that a 40 year old truck would. It will need new cab corners, rocker panels, rear fender wells and door bottoms. The bed also has some rust so we my cut it out and go with an old school wood bed. The good part is all of these panels can be bought from JC Whitney for about $15 a peice.

So here are some of the first pics. It dosen't look like much now but it is fast and loud. Check back and watch the progress.

It even has the original AM radio.

Check out the sweet original deluxe western door panels.

Here is a t-shirt design I did for my website of a very simalar truck. For those of you who do not know on top of being a stay at home dad I am also a partner in a screen printing company. We are doing some really cool things in the world of screen printing. Check out the site Capitol T-Shirt Design
